Chocolate Factory at Cadbury World

Chocolate Factory is a tilt-screen game offering education as well as fun which forms part of the interactive Purple Planet exhibition at Cadbury World.

The exhibit features three tilt-screen gaming stations giving the operator access to bespoke gaming technology that teaches about how the Cadbury factory works all the way through from sourcing cocoa beans to the creation of the chocolate sold in the shops.

Big on entertainment while incorporating a learning element, this game brings a high tech twist to the classic maze game and the tilt-screen interface injects an innovative dimension of excitement.

Competitors make their way through three levels of a chocolate factory maze — each level seeing the player take charge of a different character, each character moving in an intriguingly different way.

They first control a cocoa bean that rolls about as they tip the screen, then they gloop their way across the floor as a blob of molten chocolate before they finally take control of a human being who ambles to a gentle tilt of the screen increasing to a sprint when given full tilt.

Between action scenes players are tantalised with chocolate “info-bursts” — like the fact that 180,000 tonnes of chocolate leaves Cadbury factory each year. These factoids are displayed at random meaning a replay of the game provides continual interest.

The game was designed with simplicity, fun and accessibility at its core. The three tilt screens are set at different heights allowing for anyone from the small child to full-grown adult as well as those in wheelchairs.

HMC Interactive and Newangle worked seamlessly to bring this idea to fruition. Newangle took the creative lead including the creation of many of the graphics while HMC took care of software programming to ensure the interface works seamlessly with the gaming software they created.
